What Gym Clothes Should I Wear If I'm Just Starting Out?

Nobody tells beginners the truth about gym wear. We asked someone who has been training for years, built a gym wear brand from scratch, and made every mistake along the way. Here's what he'd tell his younger self.

Eimus — Founder, PURGD Gym Wear 2026

The Mistake Most Beginners Make

When I first started training, I wore a fitted muscle tee. I was skinny, had no real definition yet, and I thought showing my physique was the right move. It wasn't. Looking back, it was one of the worst decisions I made early on — not because there's anything wrong with a muscle tee, but because I had nothing to show yet and I knew it. Every session felt like being on display rather than being in the gym to work.

The thing is, it took me a couple of years to figure out what most experienced lifters know from day one. Not showing your physique is the whole point. You're there to train, not to be watched.

"I wish someone had told me earlier — wear what covers you, not what shows you off. The gym isn't a photoshoot."

The Turning Point

When I switched to an oversized tee, everything changed. I wish I had done it sooner. The difference wasn't just about how I looked — it was about how I felt walking into the gym. Less attention on my body. More focus on the work. More confidence to just get on with it.

That might sound counterintuitive. You'd think wearing more fitted clothing would give you more confidence. But when you're starting out and your body isn't where you want it to be yet, covering up actually frees you. You stop thinking about how you look and start thinking about how you lift.

What Beginners Get Wrong

The most common mistake I see from beginners in the gym is trying to impress. Tight clothing, branded everything, training in gear that's more suited to a photoshoot than a heavy session. The problem isn't the clothing itself — it's the mindset behind it. When you're focused on how you look, you're not focused on how you train.

My advice — wear what you like, but be humble. Nobody in the gym is paying as much attention to you as you think they are. The serious lifters are too busy working to notice.

What Actually Matters When You're Starting Out

Quality over everything. 100% cotton always wins. It breathes, it lasts, it feels better against your skin when you're working hard.

Weight of fabric matters. Lighter material for summer sessions. Heavier for winter. Don't wear a heavyweight tee in July and wonder why you're overheating.

Fit matters more than brand. Oversized top for training. Sleeveless when you want freedom of movement. Both work — neither is wrong.

Bottoms — keep it simple. Joggers when it's cold. Shorts when you're working hard. Serious lifters almost always train in shorts — the hard work produces the heat.

The One Thing Worth Spending Money On First

If you're on a budget and can only invest in one piece of gym wear, make it an oversized tee. It covers you, it works for every session, it goes from the gym to the street without looking out of place, and if you buy quality it will last you years.

The mistake most beginners make is buying cheap and replacing constantly. Pay attention to the material you buy. That's the single piece of advice I wish someone had told me on day one. A well-made 300 GSM cotton tee will outlast five cheap ones and feel better every single session.

"Never think about what others think of you. Don't ignore good opinions. Stay humble. Accept support. And always check the material before you buy."

A Note on Confidence

Here's something nobody talks about enough. When you're new to the gym, confidence feels like it comes from looking the part. But real confidence in the gym comes from doing the work consistently, showing up when you don't want to, and getting stronger over time. What you wear supports that — it doesn't replace it.

Stop worrying about what other people think of your gym wear. The lifters who have been training for years aren't judging you — most of them remember exactly what it felt like to be new. And the ones who are judging you aren't worth your attention anyway.

Why We Built PURGD For Beginners Too

PURGD was built for people who actually train. But that doesn't mean you need to be a seasoned bodybuilder to wear it. If you're just starting out and you want quality gym wear that doesn't try to do too much — wear what works, train hard, and let the results speak for themselves.

We're not just building a gym wear brand. We're building a community. PURGD from the start means you're part of something from the beginning — the early days, the first drop, the whole journey. Hard work pays off. That's true in the gym and it's true in business. We believe that and we built PURGD around it.

Start with an oversized tee. Train in it. Wash it. Repeat. Everything else follows.
